Project Proposal: Wasp Nest
1- In late spring a solitary queen wasp emerges from hibernation. 2- A protein trap, bated with liver, attracts the insect. 3- The queen is introduced into a confined environment where sustenance and a tree-like wooden apparatus are the only items provided. 4- She constructs the initial segment of the nest and lays eggs. 5- The first generation of wasps have developed and assume all further food gathering and nest construction activities. 6- Protective gear is worn when entering the confinement area to apply a deterrent substance to the surface of the wooden apparatus. 7- Colored pieces of paper and other dyed wood fibers are introduced into the environment in a staggered fashion. 8- With the deterrent substance coating all other wood surfaces, the wasps are compelled to continue nest construction using the pigmented wood fibers mixed with their saliva. 9- A “rainbow” effect is created as progress on the nest continues. 10- In late summer/early fall the nest is completed (illustration shows a partially colored nest).
