“As Washington’s premier alternative arts organization for over three decades,
Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) has supported tens of thousands of
regional artists and presented exhibitions to hundreds of thousands of visitors.

CATALYST will be a dynamic, narrative recollection of the Washington area’s multidisciplinary arts scene and WPA’s legacy, showcasing selected artists, exhibitions, programs, and events from its 35-year history.

The exhibition, curated by J. W. Mahoney, will include recent and period artworks, documentation in both still and moving media, a series of related performances and public programs, and a fully-illustrated catalogue.”

“Outstanding recent graduates of the fine-art photography and photojournalism programs of the Corcoran College of Art + Design are featured in the Gallery 31 exhibition, “Faculty Choice: New Work by Recent Corcoran Photography and Photojournalism Graduates,” which will be on view during this November’s FotoWeek DC. The show’s participants were selected by the Photography Department faculty, with each faculty member choosing one former student whose work strongly reflects the interests and influence of the teacher. The result is not only a study in influence but also a reflection of the diversity and quality of the Corcoran’s Photography Department, its students and its faculty.”

Participants are Natalie Cheung, Jake Dingman, Hatnim Lee, Antonio McAfee, Andy McMillan, and Jason Zimmerman. Faculty members, whose work also will be represented, include Margaret Adams, Frank DiPerna, Andy Grundberg, Muriel Hasbun, Claudia Smigrod, and Susan Sterner.

On Exhibit: Photos Taken from My Bed

This project was conducted on October 15th, 2010 at the Portland Art Museum for the second annual Shine a Light event. Here is a discription of that event:

“For the second year in a row, the one-night-only event Shine A Light illuminates the Portland Art Museum with a wide, bright beam of possibility: artists inviting visitors to do things in a museum they may never have done before, to look at a museum in a whole new way. Late this summer, these artists and members of the Museum’s education department were invited to consider with one another what Shine A Light means for the artists, and what it might mean for the visitors, and the Museum.”

And, a short project description:

One hundred plaster casts of classical Greek and Roman sculpture were some of the first acquisitions of the Portland Art Museum and formed the foundation of their original European collection. Paying homage to those modest roots, periodic “wrestling performances” will be staged in a traditional Greco-Roman style adjacent to the portion of the collection that has inspired this project.

Exquisite Corpse

Civilian Art Projects is pleased to present Exquisite Corpse – a collaborative photo project curated by Corcoran Photography alums Jessica Cebra, Dave Gustine, and Marissa Long. Invented by Surrealists in 1925, the Exquisite Corpse method involves a group of collaborators assembling a collection of words or images – each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule or by being allowed to see only the end of what the previous person has contributed. The technique is similar to an old parlour game called “Consequences” in which players write in turn on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the writing, and then pass it on to the next player for further contribution.

While the Exquisite Corpse being exhibited at Civilian Art Projects utilizes the method most commonly seen in the writing exercise, words have been substituted here with images. The project began with each of the three co-curators initiating a “set” or “sentence” of images with his or her own photograph. Each of these photographs was then passed on to another photographer, who created a new image in response to the one he or she had received. That new image then served as inspiration for the next photographer, and so on. The project now includes 28 photographers and three sets of images, each of which present both recognizable connections and surprising juxtapositions, and illustrate the responsive, dreamlike aesthetic that makes the exquisite corpse methodology so exquisite.

The project’s photographers are an eclectic mix in themselves, including many artists based in D.C., and others living in New York, California, and as far away as China and South Africa. The Exquisite Corpse photographers are:

In addition to screening the completed shorts from this ongoing project, audience participation will help fill out the evening with additional readings from the original stories and the adapted screenplays. (There will be conference inspired prizes as well–based on the “Making Things, Making Things Better, Making Things Worse” theme of the conference.)

I will be giving a lecture about my work at Portland State University’s Shattuck Hall Annex (corner of SW Broadway and Hall on the PSU campus) on May 12th from 12-1 p.m. This is part of the spring PSU MFA Candidacy Lectures series and is in conjunction with my MFA graduate exhibition STORIES!!!! on view in The New Video Gallery, PSU Art Building, 2000 SW 5th Avenue. A closing reception for the exhibition is to follow later in the day from 6-8 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

For a brief period of time in 2003 I had a mint condition Yashica-Mat. I put maybe 36 rolls through it before it was stolen. Until recently, I hadn’t examined many of the images I had taken, primarily in Northern, PA, Lancaster Co., Baltimore, MD, and Ocean City, MD, until recently when I had the negatives scanned. Here is a selection from that series.

I think the title just about says it all. For now I’m just posting some of the images my Mom (Terri J. Pfeiffer) has sent me, and will continue to add more, but am not settled on a particular format to present them aside from this website. I’m sure that we’ll be discussing such things down the road as the archive continues to build.
